I love a good action-packed movie with fight scenes and special effects that transport and encompass me through the magic of cinematography. I particularly enjoy movies that keep me on the edge of my chair consumed by emotions that parallel those of the protagonist. The original Doctor Strange is my favorite.

Have you ever stopped to marvel at the incredible engineering feats that surround us every day? From the towering skyscrapers to the bridges we cross, the modern world is filled with engineering marvels that are hiding in plain sight. But have you ever wondered how these feats of engineering are made possible? The answer, of course, lies in mathematics. Whenever we hear terms like calculus or differential equations, we tend to shy away from it because it’s viewed as a complex and useless branch of mathematics that exists simply to burden students.

Young learners sometimes regard math as boring, often because they see little application to real-life situations. While it’s true that solving sums and doing algebra for their own sake may not excite some students, math can be made more appealing to math-averse students when they are shown how it can be used to solve real-life problems. One use of math that demonstrates its everyday applications is measurement.

I know some people who save tickets from an arcade over the course of several years in order to buy a really expensive prize like a TV even though, cost-wise, one might be better off buying that TV from a store. Arcades make you buy prizes with “tickets” rather than with actual currency for a good reason: The true value of items is hidden. In this article, we will be using math to ascertain the true cost of these prizes.

It is a fact that many in this world are hungry. According to a recent report prepared by the United Nations and other international organizations, approximately 2.3 billion of the people on the planet —29.3% of the world’s nearly 8 billion humans—were moderately or severely food insecure in 2021.  And that number continues to grow.

What constitutes a satisfactory game? There was a time - in a galaxy far far away - that the best games involved playing cards, dice, or a board. Not anymore. Today the most popular games are online computer ones. Often they have a unique story line, detailed background animation, a customizable avatar, and frequently some form of conflict.

Imagine someone cooking for a group of hungry guests hoping for a good meal. Unfortunately, that person suffers from weak math skills and is unable to alter the quantities of ingredients and the preparation and cooking times in the original recipe to produce enough food to accommodate more people. Without math, these guests are left starved and disappointed.

For example, if you were assigned to a group in class as part of some exercise and given a group number, you will use your short-term memory to remember that number throughout the exercise, and then likely forget that bit of knowledge within a minute after the exercise has ended.
