FAQs
Why is this initiative called Infinite Possibilities?
The dictionary meaning of infinite means limitless or endless in scope, space, or size. In mathematics, “infinity” is the concept that generally refers to something without a limit. We chose the name, Infinite Possibilities, to highlight the infinite opportunities and career paths the field of mathematics and its applications can provide to all of us. We hope IP will inspire you to discover the joys of mathematics.
What is the Math Buddy Program?
Often all it takes is a little extra help, or the opportunity to study with another student, to help an individual improve his or her math grades and better understand math concepts. Math Buddy is a voluntary, student-led program, through which high school students with a high level of math expertise—Math Buddies—commit to helping one or two other students master math concepts and improve their homework. Math Buddies provide this ancillary instruction and support virtually.
How different is the Math Buddy Program from voluntary tutoring programs?
Unlike lessons that may be offered in voluntary tutoring programs, the Math Buddy program includes a commitment by our team to support students for a minimum of one quarter or, ideally, a full academic year. Through this consistent support, a Math Buddy volunteer can establish a more consistent working relationship with their learning partner, leading to a higher level of success.
Do I have to pay to join the Math Buddy program?
No, the program is 100% free. The team behind Infinite Possibilities feels a responsibility to contribute to their community. By volunteering their time for an extended period, Math Buddies offer their assistance free of charge to all participating students.
Why does a Math Buddy only commit to a maximum of 2 students at a time? Can they not help more students?
The Math Buddy team are high school students volunteering their time in this program. To ensure that they can focus on their own schoolwork and other activities while continuing to provide high-quality support to each student they work with, we have restricted the number of students each Math Buddy can help. Our goal is to help our Math Buddies and participating students thrive together.
Who can request a Math Buddy?
Any student attending grades 4-12 can apply to request a Math Buddy. We work hard to match Math Buddies with students based on grade, math level, language, location, and other criteria. We reserve the right to decline or discontinue any participating student due to disciplinary or scheduling issues.
Can I start a Math Buddies program at my school or within my community?
Yes, you can, and we have a playbook with steps and resources to help you start a Math Buddies program in your community. Please contact us to request a copy of the Math Buddies playbook.
The blogs under Math Matters are really interesting. Can I republish them on my blog?
You may republish the original content that you published on the Math Matters blog as long you credit it to Infinite Possibilities.
